Anselm Kiefer - Fallen Angels

Anselm Kiefer - Fallen Angels

Palazzo Strozzi hosts a grand exhibition dedicated to one of the greatest masters of art between the 20th and 21st centuries, Anselm Kiefer. Renowned for his striking works that through painting, sculpture and installation,  Anselm Kiefer with Fallen Angels investigate the themes of memory, myth, war and existence and presents at Palazzo Strozzi a journey through historical works and new productions, in an original dialogue with Renaissance architecture.

The exhibition, on display from 22 March to 21 July 2024, offers an overview of the German artist's work, which accompanies his research through the use of a variety of expressive media together with experimentation with materials, such as lead, straw, plants, textiles and woodcuts, that characterise his work.

Indeed, in Anselm Kiefer's artistic journey, myth, religion, mysticism, poetry, philosophy and the concept of the rejection of limits come together, not only in terms of the monumentality of the work and the materials used, but above all in the way he investigates the depths of memory and the past.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the artist has created a large-scale work especially for the courtyard of Palazzo Strozzi: it is Engelsturz (Fallen Angels). The work gives its name to the exhibition and was created to establish a dialogue between exhibition space and work, past and present, tradition and contemporaneity.

The subject of the painting is the passage from the Apocalypse describing the fight between the archangel Michael and the rebel angels, a metaphor for the struggle between Good and Evil, between the metaphysical world and the earthly world.

Anselm Kiefer - Fallen Angels

The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi aims to convey the vital complexity of Kiefer’s art, celebrating the interweaving of figure and abstraction, nature and artificiality, creation and destruction in a deeply engaging project, both in the physical and conceptual space of his works.
