Palazzo Panciatichi o del Pegaso

Palazzo del Pegaso - Regione Toscana

The historical monumental palace was built at the end of the XIV century by grouping together small lots of artisan workshops, at the behest of Agnolo di Ghezzo della Casa, cloth merchant, ambassador to Bologna and Ferrara, Captain of Pistoia and Pisa.

The foundations insist on the remains of an old bridge over the Mugnone, on the corner of Via Larga, Via dei Frenai, then Via dei Calderai, now Via Pucci, on the corner of Via Cavour. When the Medici family made it their home, Via dei Calderai became important and in the mid-seventeenth century it was given to the Panciatichi family, who renovated it to include Palazzo Covoni Capponi.

In 1697 the imposing monumental Staircase was inserted and in the following century a flat was enlarged and built for Giovan Gualtiero Panciatichi, who became Ambassador and Grand Chamberlain to Maria Teresa of Austria (1741). The small rooms frescoed by Gian Domenico Ferretti, Vincenzo Meucci and Pietro Anderlini are still visible from that period: The Apotheosis of Hercules, The Triumph of Time over Slander (Ferretti), The Allegory of Pastoral Poetry (Meucci).

With Ferdinando Panciatichi, heir and important figure in the then capital city of Florence (1865), the palace was divided into various rooms: on the ground floor there were stables, shops and a café; on the first floor there was the Circolo di conversazione dei risorti, a meeting place for the city and Turin bourgeoisie, and on the second floor there were houses.

In 1910 it became the property of Società Cattolica di Assicurazione and Istituto Nazionale di Assicurazione. In the recent history of the building we can see the property take over from the Provveditorato agli studi until 1972 and since 1973 it has hosted the Regional Council.
