Sala del Colosso, Galleria dell'Accademia

The new Accademia Gallery

There is a new life for the Accademia Gallery, one of the most famous Florentine museums in the world, comparable with Michelangelo's David. New features include a new air conditioning system, new lighting and fittings, starting at the beginning of the experience.

The Sala del Colosso (which houses Giambologna's large plaster model of the Rape of the Sabine Women) has been completely redesigned. Thanks to the new LED lighting and the walls now being painted blue, the various 15th and 16th century paintings can be better appreciated. Thus includes works by Botticelli (a youthful Madonna and Child and the Pala del Trebbio), Perugino (Assumption of the Virgin)and Ghirlandaio. In an adjoining space, notable works by Paolo Uccello (Tebaide) and Scheggia (the famous Cassone Adimari) can be found.

In addition to these novelties, there is also the new layout, recently opened is the Sala della Pittura of the 13th and 14th centuries. These feature a series of works by Giotto's precursors followers (of which a precious pictorial fragment is also preserved).

An exhibition of portraits by Michelangelo, created by Daniele da Votlerra, is now on, One more opportunity to visit, or  revisit, this extraordinary museum, which does not want to be exclusively known as 'the museum of David'.
