Carnival is in the air! And there are many events scheduled, not only in the city, but also in the surrounding area until the grand finale of Shrove Tuesday on 4 March. In the Florence of the past, carnival was a time of feasting, fun and sociability: principles that animate both the events in the square and the more sophisticated ones, such as the ‘Gran Ballo Regine a Palazzo’ Gala evening scheduled for Saturday 8 February; an event that is certainly not for everyone, but for charity.
Something more accessible will take place on Sunday 9 February, in the streets of the city centre: 300 artists and musicians will invade the public space with spectacular choreographies and performances. At the end of this festival there will be an award ceremony for the most original group. The meeting is set for 2 p.m. in Piazza Santa Maria Novella.
For children, who love dressing up, there are other events, which you can follow on this page with further updates. There are also many opportunities to celebrate this crazy time of year around Florence, where you can also see parades of allegorical floats.
Not to be missed is the Mugello Carnival in Borgo San Lorenzo, which features parades of floats, concerts, theatrical performances, and markets where you can buy typical local products. The first event is on Sunday 9 February at 11 a.m. It continues every Sunday until the highlight, Tuesday 4 March
The carnivals of San Mauro a Signa and Dicomano are also very popular. With over 50 years of history behind it, the Dicomano Carnival is one of the oldest in Tuscany. There are four parades, all with free admission.
In short, many occasions to celebrate Carnival together while discovering, or rediscovering, our magnificent territory! Carnival is also synonymous with sweets. Discover the specialities of this period in the article at the bottom of the page
