Ultra Trail Mugello - Permanent route

In the forests of Giogo Casaglia you find the permanent route, on which every year at the end of April the Ultra Trail Mugello challenge takes place, that can be walked at any time of year independently and safely.

It consists of two routes, one 60km long and the other 24km long. Both are entirely maintained, with over 70 geo-referenced trail signs with a yellow coloured plate with emergency numbers and a call post.

The 60 km route has an elevation gain of 3200 metres, its start and finish are in Badia di Moscheta and the maximum completion time is 13 hours. The 24 km one has a height difference of 1280 m and runs along the northern part of the Mugello area, the most arduous and wildest of the forest complex.

The routes are on trails, mule tracks and forest roads while you walk on tarmac for only 300 metres.

These routes are entirely in the forest area of the Tuscan regional property managed by the Unione Montana dei Comuni del Mugello called Complesso Giogo-Casaglia, an area of 6700 hectares over the Apennine ridge between Mugello and upper Mugello. Here there is a veritable explosion of colours, scents, crystal clear waterfalls: a natural and wild environment almost unlike any other.
The wildlife heritage of the complex, thanks to the protection standards established for the state-owned areas, is especially rich both in quantity and quality. There is a very large presence of fallow and roe deers, and also wild boars, polecats, stone martens, badgers, squirrels and many more. But very important has been the commitment to bring back the wolf, that since 1988 inhabits this environment as in the past. There are also numerous birds of prey: the golden eagle nests in the Valle del Rovigo.
