‘Podere La Querciola’ is a protected natural area that extends for about 56 hectares in the Florentine plain. Its public property portion was purchased by the Municipality of Sesto Fiorentino in 2008, and named ‘Parco della Piana’. The management of the park was subsequently entrusted to Circolo Legambiente of Sesto Fiorentino.
Today the area is a popular destination for professional and amateur photographers, as well as a rich fauna of aquatic birds. Throughout the year, the oasis comes to host 176 different species of birds, either sedentary or migratory, including the grey heron, the little egret, the great white heron, the little grebe, and various species of anatidae and waders; the black-winged stilt is present between March and August.
