Chiesa di San Martino a Carcheri

San Martino a Carcheri church

Coming down from San Romolo towards the Val di Pesa, right before Ginestra, you find the church of San Martino a Carcheri. The parish already existed in 1272, but the present church dates back to 1834.

Under the outside porch you can still see the Romanesque stonework and the trace of the ancient portal, slightly shifted compared to the one visible today, due to the smaller size of the building. The current front door features a characterisation uesd for the first time by Michelozzo that was very common in Tuscany starting from 1400.

The inside of the church has a single hall with a trussed roof. The high altar is adorned with a 1399 triptych, portraying San Martino and the Poor among the saints Antonio Abate, Giacomo Minore, Benedetto and Miniato, attributed to the “Maestro”, an alias identifying a painter that was strongly linked to the Catalan Gothic style. On the left side of the church is the Compagnia della Santissima Annunziata chapel, founded in 1592. A golden case houses a Florentine school Annunciation, that can be attributed to the circle of Alessandro Allori.
