Piazza Lorenzo Ghiberti

Oratorio del Crocifisso or Chiesa della Compagnia

Arriving in Pelago, before reaching piazza Ghiberti, you find the Oratorio del Santissimo Crocifisso or Chiesa della Compagnia, as it is commonly called by the citizens of Pelago.

It was built in the first half of the 17th century by a company of laymen who decided to create a new seat for themselves; subject to extensive renovation work carried out by the brotherhood until the first half of the 18th century, it owes its current appearance to the post-war reconstruction, with the stone confessional being added only in 1970.

Inside of it is the wooden Crucifix dating back, by analogy with other crosses, to 1420 and still being worshipped today; such was the devotion that on the occasion of a display in the summer of 1728 “the Compagnia was completely adorned in red. Grand Duke Gian Gastone de’ Medici loaned several tapestries to decorate the church”.
