Inside the Pelago castrum stands the church of San Clemente, probably built together with the castle, which in 1413 became the Parish church of Pelago, a status it still holds today. The structure of the church was altered several times during the centuries and the few wall relics that are visible don't allow for any clear assumption. However it is likely that around 1413 the structure was partially modified by building the bell tower, a typical feature in parish churches.
The inner baptismal Font, probably hailing from the San Gervasio a Sorgnano parish church, an ancient church built northwest of San Clemente in a location still called today La Pieve, abolished around 1615, features in the centre of the arch a sculpted coat of arms of the Da Filicaia family, while between 1737 and 1740 the polychrome marble main altar and three other side altars were added.
Today it hosts the San Clemente museum of sacred art. Even so High Masses are still held in it.
