In 1854, the Villa of Renaissance origins first owned by the Zati family and then by the Alessandri family was given to John Temple Leader.
In 1906, it was bought by Bernard Berenson, famous art critic and historian. He turned it into an important cultural centre as well as a point of reference for the Florentine Anglo-Saxon community. To him we owe the fundamental restoration works of the villa and garden, commissioned to Cecil Pinsent and Geoffrey Scott . In 1936, Berenson decided to donate the villa, together with the invaluable cultural heritage in it, to the Harvard University.
