The tiny Church of San Martino al Vescovo, founded in the 10th century and thought to be where Dante Alighieri married, was rebuilt in 1479 by the Compagnia dei Buonomini di San Martino. The Confraternity set up in 1441 to help affluent families who had fallen on hard times.
The frescoes depict scenes from the Life of Saint Martin and Works of Charity and are attributed to the workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio. The lunettes are of both historic and artistic interest, giving a glimpse of life in 15th-century Florence.
