The country villa was completed in 1610, and in the same year the gardens were remodelled for the first time. At the beginning of the 18th century, various architectural features, statues, fountains and water tricks were added to the pre-existing structures, which included the entrance path and the limonaia (lemon house). Further modifications were made in the 19th century, after which the garden was intermittently abandoned. It has since been reopened to the public following restoration and the refurbishing of the numerous examples of topiary art.
