You enter the square from Borgo San Frediano, Borgo Stella, via Santa Monaca and Piazza Piattellina. The name refers to the Carmelite church, Santa Maria del Carmine, which dominates the square, currently also including the wide arm that connects the square with borgo San Frediano, although its different configuration and origin is evident. The large space in front of the Carmine church was sketched in order to hold the believers on the occasion of religious holidays.
The square has long been occupied by a large parking lot, suppressed in January 2015 with the pedestrianization of the area, as part of a project commissioned by the Municipality and aimed at reorganizing the traffic of the entire district, with the redevelopment of green spaces and the promotion of tourism and craft activities in the area.
