Reconstruction of memory. An exhibition

The Historical Archive of the Municipality of Florence is hosting an exhibition entitled Reconstruction of Memory. Memory of Reconstruction, conceived to mark the 80th anniversary of the destruction of Florence's bridges and embankments on the night between 3 and 4 August 1944.

The exhibition, which opens on 25 October and continues until 18 January 2025, documents the activities of the City of Florence to cope with the reconstruction after the devastation by German mines in the city centre in the crucial phase of World War II.

Reconstruction also offered itself as a debate on a new vision of the city, opened by a Design Competition launched in 1945, continued with a referendum proposed to citizens to identify the best projects.

The urban planning and architectural choices that were then selected and not always respected are still visible today in the streets of the historic centre.
The best architects of the time participated in the competition, from Gamberini to Savioli, from Detti to Ricci and many others, for a total of 22 projects analysed.

Two videos will be presented in the exhibition to visualise the reconstruction activities.
