The Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence presents the exhibition Controcanto (Countermelody), an evocative dialogue between the feminine universe of the Florentine artist Daniela De Lorenzo and the portraits of the 19th-century sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini, as well as an OFF event of the festival L'eredità delle donne, the event dedicated to female empowerment that enhances the past and present contributions of women in the various fields of knowledge.
The title of the exhibition is inspired by Daniela De Lorenzo's (2004/2024) photographic work of the same name: a self-portrait that, through a sudden shift of the head in front of the camera lens at the moment of the shot, turns the snapshot into a dilated, suspended time.
Controcanto therefore features ten female busts by the sculptor Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850) and Daniela De Lorenzo's multidisciplinary project, created especially for the exhibition, using photography, video sculpture and installations: a path that explores the aesthetic interaction between the 19th-century women portrayed by Bartolini and the Florentine artist's studies on the female body.
The opening will be on 25 November, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and will be open from 26 November to 6 January 2025.
The central topic of the exhibition is the female portrait/self-portrait, with a focus on movement and the projection of the woman's body: a reminder of the past of Bartolini's study of natural beauty at the 19th century Academy, and the present of Daniela De Lorenzo's current research on the woman's body, including photography, sculptures and installations that project its representation into the future.
