Every year, on February 18, Florence celebrates Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, the Electress of the Palatinate, on the day she died in 1743. This great woman, the last descendant of the Medici family, by signing the famous Family Pact, bound all treasures owned by the Medici to the city of Florence, preventing them from being scattered or lost after her death.
In her honor, on Saturday, all Municipality museums (Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Maria Novella, Museo Novecento, Museo Stefano Bardini) together with Palazzo Medici Riccardi, are going to be free of charge. Moreover, among the state museums, the Medici Chapels (the burial place of the Electress), Bargello museum and Palazzo Davanzati, are also going to be open for free.
Check the opening hours at this link.
On the same day, in the Hall of Lilies in Palazzo Vecchio (from 11am), thanks to a theatrical event organized by Mus.e Association, it will be possible to meet the Electress herself. To find out more about the event and to make a reservation, visit this page.
At 10.20am, an historical parade is going to march from Palagio di Parte Guelfa to the Medici Chapels, where a flower garland is going to be laid on the Electress’ tomb.
